our new adventure

We decided to get chickens this spring after seeing Jessica's chickens in Missouri last summer.  So here are our first two White leghorns.  We always had chicken growing up and I have missed being around them.  In our community you have to have a permit and pay a fee every year to have chickens so there is no savings in having them for eggs, but we still look forward to enjoying them wandering around the yard when they are big enough.

At first we kept them in Eric's room in a plastic container with their heat lamp. Their tail feathers came in first and were so cute.
Everytime the door opened Issy cat would check them out.
Getting ready to introduce them to their new home.
Joseph built this 4x6' pen for them. This is without the trim and roofing.
Joseph has finished the trim since these pitcures were taken.  Keith and I put on the tar paper last week and then Joseph added the shingles that evening.  I'll add a pitcure of it later after we get it painted. We are thinking of a barn red.
This is in their enclosed area where they roost and their future nesting box is. Here they still look quite shaggy but in the last two weeks their feathers have finished coming in.
These are our second set of chickens- Rhode Island Reds.  We were told we would have no problem putting them with the other chickens after they got their feathers, but one of the white hens is not too welcoming, but I couldn't handle chickens in my bathroom any longer,so we only have them together when someone can keep an eye on them.  We keep one set in the upper part and one on the lower part.

They roost okay together, but every morning at 5:50 a.m. I have to run outside and seperate them after they get up.  Hopefully as the little red hens get bigger they will learn to get along.
